About Us

At NZALA, our mission is to empower, connect, and advocate for African lawyers and legal professionals in New Zealand. We are a dynamic and diverse community of legal professionals dedicated to promoting excellence, diversity, and inclusion within the legal field in New Zealand. 

In early 2022, a group of lawyers started communicating online to form a professional association to assist lawyers and law students of African descent in New Zealand. NZALA was incorporated on 4 August 2023 with its members located across New Zealand.

The objectives of NZALA include to promote fellowship and support amongst people of African descent; to identify and encourage African initiatives; to promote law reform and conduct research on any issue affecting lawyers and people of African descent; and to achieve the elimination of race discrimination within the New Zealand legal profession to ensure true equality of opportunity and equal access for all people.

Our vision is to see a legal profession in New Zealand that reflects the diversity of our society, where African lawyers are recognized and valued for their contributions, and where justice is accessible to all.
